What are your rights if you cannot get to work because of bad weather?
You do not have an automatic right to paid time off if you are unable to get to work due to bad weather or travel disruption caused by the weather. However if you were unable to get to work because transport provided by your employer was unavailable, or if you were available for work and your place of work was closed you may be entitled to paid time off. Your employment contract or staff handbook should provide further information about arrangements during periods of weather disruption and your employer should treat all employees in a fair and consistent manner if they are unable to get to work. Parents whose children are unable to attend school due to a school closure should be entitled to unpaid emergency leave and you should inform your employer who may allow you to take the time as paid holiday instead.
